Is it time for a change?

Just recently Pentax announced thier new DSLR camera. Pentax K5 has a lot more features compared to what the company has offered in the past. It is being compared to the Nikon D7000 which is in comparison quite a bit cheaper. Pentax has listed the K5 at a starting price of $1600.00 where Nikon has the D7000 listed for $1200.00. The K5 is 16.3 MP while Nikon is right there with 16.2 MP. Both offer a 3 inch LCD screen and full HD 1080p video qualities. The D7000 has 39 AF points while the K5 falls short with only 11 AF points. But the K5 does take a step above because of the magnesium alloy body which is completely weather sealed and ISO 100-12800, expandable to 80 and 512oo. Should I check into getting into the Nikon family or should I stick with the trusty Pentax? So far Pentax has been a great camera but will they offer room for growth in the future?

  1. It might just come down to whether you need to use Pentax lenses you own already, if you value better weather sealing and a more solid build/feel. (although I have not held a D7000, just read about other user's comments). How it feels in the hand I think makes a big difference. If you are going to use it a lot you need it be be comfortable. Perhaps wait and see. What is your budget for lenses? Pentax also have the image stabilization in the body, which can save you money when buying new lenses. Also, every Pentax lens ever made can be used on a Pentax DSLR, e.g. if you look on eBay, you can buy some fantastic prime lenses like the M 50mm 1.7 for around $70. For me this is a huge bonus. Personally I plan to buy the K-5 in the next six months when the prices fall a little and reviews are out. I really like the solid feel of the body of the Pentax K-m I own now. It is a very solid camera.
